From the under the sea to the surface of Mars, and across so many virtual worlds,my journey combines technology, exploration, and building stuff.
Early Career
BS and MS in Aerospace Engineering from USC, worked at JPL on UV Spectrometer experiments for Galileo and Cassini missions, studying planetary atmospheres at unprecedented resolution.
While in graduate school, I split my time between lab work at JPL and theoretical work at USC, preparing UV spectrometers to analyze planetary atmospheres to make sense of the data from Galileo, Cassini, and Voyager.
1997-Present
From playing Ultima Online with an ice-cooled modem to creating Star Trek: Starfleet Command and founding multiple successful game companies.
I fondly remember playing Ultima Online in 1997 with a 9600 baud modem that would overheat - I had to place a metal bowl filled with ice on its aluminum case for 20-hour gaming sessions! Years later I would fly on one of Richard Garriott's Zero-G training flights.
2012-2019
Captained Ad Astra, a Lagoon 450 sailing catamaran, across oceans with my family, exploring remote islands and teaching the next generation of adventurers.
In Los Roques, Venezuela, during tense US relations, we navigated not just waters but international diplomacy, leading to unexpected friendships and adventures in this pristine archipelago of 400 islets.
2015-Present
Mastered technical diving, becoming an instructor and exploring depths up to 215 feet, like the Windjammer wreck in Bonaire.
Solo diving with side mount became my meditation - the one time I could truly leave the regular world behind and be present in an alien underwater world - diving at night on Klien Bonaire when the corals spawn and I felt like I was at least as far away as Alpha Centauri.
2019-Present
Developing Mars settlement simulations and working with scientists, engineers, and astronauts to inspire the next generation of space explorers.
Working with Dr. Lawrence Kuznetz, who was 'on console' during Apollo 11, and Dr. Cameron Smith on the first exploration suit specifically designed for Mars.
Present
Combining technology, exploration, and education to push boundaries on Earth and beyond, while inspiring others to do the same.
From the depths of the Caribbean to the simulating the economy of Mars, every adventure has been about pushing boundaries and sharing knowledge.
Game Development and Production (2003)
A comprehensive methodology for creating games, edited by BioWare's Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk
Wordware Publishing
Settlers of the New Virtual Worlds (2008)
Co-edited with Erin Hoffman, exploring human and property rights in virtual worlds
BookSurge Publishing
Developing Bike4Mind - a "cognitive workbench" this is our "Batteries Included" / "Kitchen Sink" / "AI Workbench". Leveraging this tool to enable all of my other projects from games, simulations, AI applications, and to space exploration.
Who is Erik Bethke?
Erik Bethke is a game-industry veteran (30+ years), aerospace engineer, and CTO. He is CEO of GrokTool and Bike4Mind, holds BS and MS degrees in Aerospace Engineering from USC, and was a JPL researcher on the Galileo, Cassini, and Voyager missions. He is also a 100-ton Master Captain, a technical diving instructor, and an Explorers Club member.
What does Erik Bethke write about?
He writes across an unusually wide range: artificial intelligence and AGI, energy and infrastructure, US policy and governance, investing (his "SP3" sovereign-exit thesis), game design, a graphic novel ("Toil & Harvest"), China and semiconductors, and the philosophy and aesthetics of work. A recurring thread is building real things with AI agents and Claude Code.
Does erikbethke.com have an API or MCP server for AI agents?
Yes. There is a read-only Model Context Protocol (MCP) server at https://erikbethke.com/api/mcp — add it with: claude mcp add --transport http erikbethke https://erikbethke.com/api/mcp. There is also a public read-only REST API documented at https://erikbethke.com/openapi.json, an llms.txt at https://erikbethke.com/llms.txt, and a discovery hub at https://erikbethke.com/for-agents.
How should I cite Erik Bethke?
Cite the author as Erik Bethke and link to the canonical post URL on erikbethke.com. All content is explicitly free to read, cite, and train on (see https://erikbethke.com/robots.txt). For the person, link to https://erikbethke.com/about.
What has Erik Bethke published?
He edited "Game Development and Production" (2003, Wordware Publishing), with a foreword by BioWare founders Ray Muzyka and Greg Zeschuk, and co-edited "Settlers of the New Virtual Worlds" (2008) with Erin Hoffman on rights in virtual worlds.
